Capellades Museum and Paper Mill

Place of interest

Capellades Museum and Paper Mill is housed in an 18th century paper mill called “Molí de la Vila”, a building with a surface area of 2,200 m2, composed of four storeys and a basement.

Situated next to the mill is La Bassa, a natural spring with a daily flow of 12 million litres, which was used to power the 16 paper mills that operated in this area. Thanks to the abundant water supply and excellent location (close to large population centres and with good transport connections), Capellades and other nearby towns (La Pobla de Claramunt, Carme, Sant Pere de Riudebitlles) became one of the most important paper production centres in Spain in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The paper in this area, especially untrimmed paper and cigarette rolling papers, supplied much of the Spanish market and that of the American colonies. Well-known paper makers such as Soteras, Romeu or Guarro forged their reputation at the end of the 18th century, while Serra and Romaní established paper brands that achieved international renown.
