Itineraries of Democratic Memory in Penedès

The Spanish Civil War began on July 19, 1936. Catalonia soon became the political and economic capital of the Republic, and the Penedès region, although far from the front, was immersed in the war effort: the militiamen volunteers, army soldiers, refugees from other parts of the country, military hospitals, airfields, aerial bombardments, food shortages, violence and repression, agricultural and industrial collectivizations...
In 47 towns of the Alt Penedès, Baix Penedès and Garraf regions there are more than 400 historical sites and elements related to the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and inventoried by the historical research project "Tots els noms", coordinated by the Institut d'Estudis Penedesencs.

Three routes have been designed around these elements; routes that is also integrated into the Network of Historic Memory Places of Catalonia: the route of the Coast Defenses, the route of the Front in Penedès and the route of the Avispero de la Gloriosa. In these routes, CIARGA or CIUDEB stand out. The routes are interrelated and you can choose to do them geographically or thematically.
